While Scotter and Whalebomb were putting my concert attendance and blogging ethics to shame this past weekend with their epic coverage of the Detroit Metro Times Blowout, I at least managed to make it out of the house once on Saturday night to catch the Evangelicals play at the Billiken Club (St. Louis). Because of some uncouth scheduling snafu, they ended up playing first, which means I missed the first half of their set, which is incredibly upsetting because what I did manage to catch was absolutely amazing. All the way from Oklahoma, it looked like the Evangelicals brought their own lighting equipment, consisting entirely of black lights and strobes and neon clothing accessories. Despite some of the girls in front of me laughing whenever the singer would take on his “spooky” voice, it was a great (half) set. I don’t know how I’d describe them… kind of like early Cure but minus the parts about being British and morbidly depressing. So nothing like the Cure, then, huh? Whatever, great new band, I bought the record in spite of the fact of the man selling it to me being so out of it he tried to give me all my money back as my change. The above video is of the songs “Another Day” and “Skeleton Man,” which closed the set.
